It's a rough social and political climate for a swimsuit issue.
So, things are probably really awkward for Sports Illustrated's latest swimsuit issue. The one that just hit newsstands. The one with Danielle Herrington on the cover.
The one we really wanna look at.
Wait. No. That's probably not appropriate, is it? We're ... curious. Wait. No. We're ... interested in ... the articles.
Look, the whole thing started back in 1964 and used to be something that was highly anticipated by young men all over the country (and then world).
It was regarded in the modeling world as one of the highest honors to be the cover model. Babette March was the first. Then, there was the likes of Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley, Carol Alt, Paulina Porizkova, Elle Macpherson, Kathy Ireland, Tyra Banks, Brooklyn Decker, Kate Upton, and even Beyonce (in 2007).
SI swimsuit editor MJ Day says that even though the issue was conceived and shot before the #MeToo movement heated up last fall, it's about more than just women in swimsuits.
Day says the magazine is "creating and giving platforms to these women" and presenting them as multidimensional people.
Judging from social media's response, we're not alone in being nervous.
Of course, there were just as many posts that seemed to have no trouble with the issue.
Now, where's the nearest newsstand?
