Pittsburgh's very own canine version of Big Ben will help encourage area families to consider adopting a pet on Super Bowl Sunday.
Dak, a treeing walker coonhound — real name Aquaman, but it was changed temporarily because of copyright issues — will be among 90 dogs competing for not just the "Lombarky Trophy," but for the coveted title of "Most Valuable Puppy" during Animal Planet's Puppy Bowl XIV , which airs prior to Sunday's Super Bowl broadcast.
The Puppy Bowl was pre-taped, so Dak will be able to make a live appearance at Animal Friends in Ohio Township for their "Ultimate Tail-Gate Adoption Event," which will take place Saturday and Sunday.
Not content to just watch the action, Animal Friends will have its own Puppy Bowl from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., featuring soon-to-be-adoptable puppies.
During the event, adoptions will be discounted to $52, although standard adoption applications will still apply.
In addition to Dak, three other area pups made the cut for the national Puppy Bowl XIV, which will be broadcast at 3 p.m. Feb. 4 on Animal Planet.
