There's a rather tall new animal at the Peoria Zoo in Illinois, but she needs a name.
The zoo wants the public's help in naming a baby giraffe born this month to parents Vivian and Taji. You might have missed it since it wasn't as press-hyped as April's birthing last year. ( Remember that national nightmare? )
Starting Jan. 26, you can go to the zoo's website and, for a $1 donation, offer a name. The naming push runs through March 1, when the zoo plans to announce the name.
Now, more than likely some schmo is gonna drop in Giraffey McGiraffeyface. And there should be more than few mutilations of the words "tall," "legs," and "high."
But we hope the zoo goes more with creativity. Like the way Nationwide does with its annual Wacky Pet Names contest.
In an effort to plug its pet health insurance, the company combs through its database of more than 600,000 insured pets to find the most clever, creative and quirky names for dogs and cats. Then it puts the top findings to a public vote. And, we gotta admit, some of these names are pretty dang inventive.
Here's a quick roundup of the best from the past couple years — and yes it's dogs and cats mixed in together.
